Fernley Builders Association Breakfast Meeting October 4h at 7:30am at the WigWam Restaurant

This is a friendly reminder that we have our monthly FBA breakfast meeting this Wednesday, October 4th at 7:30am at the Wigwam restaurant in Fernley.

We are excited to have Nicole Taylor, Work-Based Education Coordinator from the Lyon County School District as our guest speaker. She is devoted to helping students at the high school level explore career options and connect them with opportunities that will assist them in achieving their career goals. Nicole Taylor focuses on helping kids find the career path that interests them, whether that be a college related career path or learning a trade (read a short bio on Nicole below). The FBA is thrilled to announce our collaboration with Nicole and the Fernley High School to have students participate in the designing and building of a Fernley Christmas Village Structure. Details about this will be announced at the meeting on Wednesday.

Nicole Taylor spent most of her career working in various retail management positions which included: Human Resources, Inventory Management, Employee/Vendor Investigations, and Safety Compliance.  In 2017 her husband transferred duty stations with the US Navy and she took the opportunity to make a career change.  After working in schools in Lemoore California, the Navy once again moved her family--this time to Fernley Nevada.  Nicole then used her knowledge and skills from business and industry as well as the education system to assist Lyon County School District in building their Work Based Learning program.   Work-based learning is an educational strategy that offers students the opportunity to connect classroom learning to authentic business/industry experiences. Work-based learning in Nevada is described as a continuum of experiences that help prepare students for postsecondary education and careers. The goal of Work Based Learning is to assist students to be college and career-ready through authentic connections to business and industry in a field related to the student’s career interest.   Work Based Learning is a K-12 initiative and serves all students--career and college-bound.  In elementary schools, students are exposed to career options and possibilities, in Middle School students begin exploring their options, and in High School students begin to experience those options.   At the high school level, students have the option to participate in the following Work-Based Learning experiences: Supervised Agricultural Experiences, Student Based Enterprises, Simulated Work Experiences, Work Experience, Job Shadowing, and Internships.   -- Nicole Taylor 850-491-5272 Ntaylor@lyoncsd.org Work-Based Education Coordinator --Lyon County School District
